Salma Hayek
Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez (born September 2, 1966) is a
Mexican and
American actress,
director, and
television and
film producer. Hayek has appeared in more than 30 films and performed as an actress outside of
Hollywood in Mexico and
Spain. Hayek's charitable work includes increasing awareness on
violence against women and
discrimination against
immigrants.
[1]Hayek is the first Mexican national to be nominated for an
Academy Award for Best Actress. She is one of the most prominent Mexican figures in Hollywood since the legendary
Dolores del Rio. She is also, after
Fernanda Montenegro, the second of three
Latin American actresses to achieve a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
In July 2007,
The Hollywood Reporter ranked Hayek fourth in their inaugural Latino Power 50, a list of the most powerful members of the Hollywood Latino community.
[2] That same month, a poll found Hayek to be the "sexiest celebrity" out of a field of 3,000 celebrities (male and female); according to the poll, "65 percent of the U.S. population would use the term 'sexy' to describe her".

Entertainment Weekly ranked Hayek number 17 in their list of the "25 Smartest People in TV."
Hayek was born in
Coatzacoalcos,
Veracruz,
Mexico, the daughter of Diana Jiménez, an opera singer and talent scout, and Sami Hayek, an oil company executive.

Mexican of Lebanese descent while her mother is
Mexican of Spanish descent.
[8] Her first given name,
Salma, is
Arabic for "peaceful" or "calm". Raised in a wealthy, devoutly
Catholic family, she was sent to the
Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau,
Louisiana, at the age of twelve.
[7] While there, she was diagnosed with
dyslexia.
[9] She was also an accomplished
gymnast aspiring to compete in the Olympics, but her father prevented her from being recruited by the Mexican national team.
[10] The religious sisters running the Academy ejected Hayek, citing behavioral problems, so she returned to Mexico. She was later sent to live with her aunt in
Houston,
Texas, where she stayed until she was 17 years old. She attended college in Mexico City, where she studied International Relations at the
Universidad Iberoamericana. To the surprise of her family, she dropped out to pursue a career as an actress.

At the age of 23, Hayek landed the title role in
Teresa (1989), a successful Mexican
telenovela that made her a star in Mexico. In 1994, Hayek starred in the film
El Callejón de los Milagros (Miracle Alley), which has won more awards than any other movie in the history of
Mexican cinema. For her performance, Hayek was nominated for an
Ariel Award.

Hayek moved to
Los Angeles,
California in 1991 to study acting under
Stella Adler,
[12] hoping for a career in Hollywood, despite limited fluency in English, attributed to her suffering from
dyslexia.
[13] Robert Rodriguez and his producer wife
Elizabeth Avellan soon gave Hayek the break she needed, a starring role opposite
Antonio Banderas in 1995's
Desperado.
[7] The movie caught Hollywood's attention, as moviegoers proved to be dazzled by Hayek as Rodriguez had been. Due to Hayek's loyalty to the director, she would later decline playing the role
Catherine Zeta-Jones eventually took in
The Mask of Zorro after Rodriguez abandoned the project. She has also appeared in the
Spy Kids trilogy.
Hayek had a starring part opposite
Matthew Perry in the romantic comedy
Fools Rush In. She followed her success in Desperado with a brief but memorable role as a vampire queen in
From Dusk Till Dawn, where she provocatively danced on a table. In 1999, she co-starred in
Will Smith's big-budget
Wild Wild West, and played a supporting role in
Kevin Smith's
Dogma.
[7] In 2000, Hayek had an uncredited acting part opposite
Benicio del Toro in
Traffic. In 2003, she reprised her role from Desperado by appearing in
Once Upon a Time in Mexico, the final film of the
Mariachi Trilogy.
Around 2000, Hayek founded film production company
Ventanarosa, through which she produces film and television projects. Her first feature as a producer was 1999's
El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba, Mexico's official selection for submission for Best Foreign Film at the
Oscars.
[14]Frida, co-produced by Hayek, was released in 2002. Starring Hayek as
Frida Kahlo, and
Alfred Molina as her unfaithful husband,
Diego Rivera, the film was directed by
Julie Taymor and featured an entourage of stars in supporting and minor roles (
Valeria Golino,
Ashley Judd,
Edward Norton,
Geoffrey Rush) and cameos (
Antonio Banderas). She earned a Best Actress
Academy Award nomination for her performance.
[7] This made Hayek, along with
Katy Jurado and
Adriana Barraza, one of only three Mexican actresses to have been nominated for an Academy Award. The film earned two Oscars.
"In the Time of the Butterflies," is a 2001 feature film based on the Julia Álvarez book of the same name, covering the lives of the Mirabal sisters.
In the movie, Salma Hayek plays one of the sisters, Minerva, and Edward James Olmos plays the Dominican dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo whom the sisters opposed. Marc Anthony plays a brief role as Minerva's first love, and as the motivation for her later revolutionary activities.
In 2003, Hayek produced and directed the
The Maldonado Miracle, a
Showtime movie which won her a
Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing in a Children/Youth/Family Special.

music video for
Prince, titled "
Te Amo Corazon" ("I love you, sweetheart") that featured her good friend
Mia Maestro.
[16]Hayek is an executive producer of
Ugly Betty, a television series airing around the world since September 2006. Hayek adapted the series for American television with
Ben Silverman, who acquired the rights and scripts from the
Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty La Fea in 2001. Originally intended as a half hour sitcom for NBC in 2004, the project would later be picked up by
ABC for the 2006–2007 season with
Silvio Horta also producing. Hayek guest-starred on
Ugly Betty as
Sofia Reyes, a magazine editor. She also had a
cameo playing an actress in the telenovela within the show. The show quickly became a ratings hit and won a
Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy Series in 2007. Hayek's performance as Sofia resulted in a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series at the
59th Primetime Emmy Awards.
[17]In April 2007, Hayek finalized negotiations with
MGM to become the
CEO of her own Latin themed film production company,
Ventanazul.

Hayek featured on an SUV in
AmsterdamHayek has been credited as a song performer in three movies. The first was Desperado for the song Quedate Aquí. In Frida she performed with band
Los Vega the Mexican
folk song La Bruja. She also recorded Siente mi amor, which played during the
end credits of Once Upon a Time in Mexico. She also contributed to Happiness is a Warm Gun in "Across the Universe" as the singing nurses.
Promotional work
Hayek has been a spokesperson for
Avon cosmetics since February 2004.

Revlon in 1998. In 2001, she modeled for
Chopard[21] and was featured in 2006
Campari adverts as photographed by
Mario Testino.

Hayek is a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Edward Norton between 1999 and 2003, and then
Josh Lucas in 2003. She has friends in Los Angeles and Mexico and is best friends with Spanish actress
Penélope Cruz. The two co-starred in the 2006 film
Bandidas. Hayek studied at
Ramtha's School of Enlightenment.

method acting to play characters. While she was cast as Frida Kahlo, Hayek had to smoke for the role using real cigarettes. As a result in her own admission she became a smoker and is currently trying to kick the habit.
On March 9, 2007, Hayek confirmed she was expecting her first child with
PPR CEO
François-Henri Pinault. On September 21, 2007, she gave birth to daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in
Los Angeles,
California. On July 18, 2008, Hayek and Pinault announced the end of their engagement.

On July 19, 2005, Hayek testified before the
U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary supporting reauthorizing the
Violence Against Women Act.

Monterrey based anti-domestic violence groups.

UNICEF to help stop the spread of life-threatening maternal and
neonatal tetanus. She is a global spokesperson for the Pampers/UNICEF partnership 1 Pack = 1 Vaccine to help raise awareness of the program.

Carol Jean Vorderman
MBE (born 24 December 1960) is an English businesswoman and
television presenter, best known for co-hosting the popular
Channel 4 game show Countdown from its first show on 2 November 1982 until 12 December 2008.
Early life
Vorderman was born in
Bedford to a
Dutch father and Welsh mother. Her parents broke up three weeks after her birth, and her mother took the family back to her home town of
Prestatyn,
North Wales, where Vorderman and siblings grew up in a lone parent household.
[1] [2] Their mother remarried in 1970 to an Italian national.
[3] Vorderman attended the
Roman Catholic comprehensive
Blessed Edward Jones High School in
Rhyl.
She did not trace the Dutch side of her family until 2007, as part of the
BBC genealogical programme
Who Do You Think You Are?. It was only at this point that she discovered that her father had been an active member of the
Dutch resistance during the
Nazi occupation. He died whilst the programme was being filmed.
[4] Her great-grandfather
Adolphe Vorderman played a key role in the discovery of
vitamins.
In 1978, she was accepted by
Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge where she studied Engineering.
Vorderman initially found employment as a graduate management trainee in
Leeds, and in her spare time was briefly a backing singer in the Leeds-based pop group Dawn Chorus and the Blue Tits, fronted by radio DJ
Liz Kershaw during the early 1980s. They recorded songs such as a version of
The Undertones' hit
Teenage Kicks.
Countdown
Vorderman's mother noticed a newspaper advertisement asking for a woman with good
mathematical skills to appear as co-host on a quiz show for the fledgling fourth terrestrial channel and submitted an application on behalf of her daughter.
[5] Thus, at the age of 21, Vorderman made her name on
Countdown with
Richard Whiteley from the show's inception in 1982 until Whiteley's death in June 2005. Initially Vorderman's only contribution to the show was the numbers game and she formed part of a five person presentation team. However, over the coming years the team was pared down and Vorderman's contribution increased. In latter years she was a joint main presenter, co-host and face of the show.
In October 2005,
Desmond Lynam replaced Whiteley and co-hosted with Vorderman. In January 2007
Des O'Connor replaced Lynam and Vorderman continued to co-host the show. Vorderman was a new type of game show hostess, revealing her intellectual ability by carrying out fast and accurate
arithmetical calculations as part of the game. Her lasting success on the show led to her becoming one of the highest-paid women in
Britain, earning
£1 million per year, from all sources.
[6]On 25 July 2008, after 26 unbroken years with the show it was announced Vorderman was stepping down from
Countdown.
[7] She later said she had resigned after failing to agree terms with Channel 4 for a new contract, and it was reported that she had been asked to take a cut of some 90 per cent of her previous salary, estimated as £900,000.
[8] She had considered leaving the show when the original show's host
Richard Whiteley died in 2005, but remained on the show when Lynam took over, and until 2008 when his eventual replacement O'Connor announced he was also to step down as the show's host.
[9] Vorderman later said that she had "put on a stone from the stress of being "sacked" from Countdown".
[8] Vorderman and O'Connor both left the show in December 2008. The producers auditioned young and currently unknown mathematicians to replace Vorderman and several well known celebrity presenters to replace O'Connor, and on 21 November 2008 it was announced that these would be 22 year old

[10]Vorderman recorded her last Countdown show on 13 November 2008 for broadcast on 12 December. Both of her children were in the audience together with many of the previous guests from Dictionary Corner. After the prize giving at the end of that show, Des O'Connor was presented with a bouquet of flowers by the show's lexicographer
Susie Dent and she received one from
Gyles Brandreth. She was too moved to complete her farewells. A special show, One Last Consonant, please Carol, hosted by Giles Brandreth and featuring Vorderman's highs and lows during 26 years of the show, was also filmed and transmitted just before her final Countdown appearance.

Between 1987 and 1989 she co-hosted the
BBC TV series Take Nobody's Word For It with Professor
Ian Fells, and was chosen to
compère the
world chess championship match between
Garry Kasparov and
Nigel Short in 1993. Vorderman has worked as a researcher and producer on many shows, specialising in science and educational programmes, and went on to present several other television programmes including the
BBC's
Tomorrow's World, but was dropped after she starred in a commercial for
Ariel washing powder. BBC management claimed it was a conflict of interest and dismissed her from the show. Carol refused to submit to their demand citing numerous other BBC 'stars' who were allowed to advertise products at that time, including Gary Rhodes the BBC chef advertising Tate and Lyle sugar. Weeks later, the ratings had dropped dramatically and the BBC asked her to return to anchor the programme but she refused.
In 1999, having been offered a lucrative contract, Vorderman moved to
ITV, going on to compère numerous
television programmes including: The Pride of Britain Awards since year 2000, Stars and their Lives, What Will They Think of Next, Tested to Destruction,
How 2 on
CITV and the popular Better Homes, which began in 1999 and spawned a spin-off Better Gardens.
Vorderman was a newspaper reviewer on the last episode of
Breakfast with Frost. In 2004 Vorderman appeared on the second series of
Strictly Come Dancing and was voted off the show on the second show of the series. In 2005, Vorderman beat off the other celebrities in
ITV's
Gameshow Marathon, winning the series. Vorderman appeared as a guest on
Have I Got News For You on 14 May 2004 and hosted the show on 26 May 2006. She presented the Channel 4 entertainment show
The Friday Night Project on 11 August 2006.
Between 2005 and 2006 she presented Sky One's quiz show Carol Vorderman's Big Brain Game over two series that have since been repeated twice on the channel during 2007.

Detox diets. Her No 1 Bestseller was Detox For Life, produced in collaboration with Ko Chohan and Anita Bean and published by
Virgin Books, which sold over a million copies. She is also a
sudoku addict since April 2005 when she wrestled a book of the puzzles from her 12-year-old daughter Katie during a holiday in the
Caribbean. Vorderman has written numerous books of sudoku puzzles with help on how to tackle them. She has sold millions of sudoku books worldwide, with almost one million being sold in less than a year in the UK alone.
A large number of school textbooks have been published under her name, chiefly by
Dorling Kindersley in series such as English Made Easy, Maths Made Easy, Science Made Easy and How to Pass
National Curriculum Maths.
After leaving "
Countdown" she will continue contributing to her column in the British magazine "Reveal".
Endorsement controversy
Vorderman has maintained a long-standing endorsement of the
debt consolidation company First Plus. In 2006, the charity
Credit Action tried to highlight the potential dangers of debt consolidation, calling on Vorderman to stop giving First Plus credibility. Her agent responded that Vorderman had no intention of curtailing the contract for a service which was perfectly legal, offered by an excellent company.

"The secured loans market was criticised and it was pertinent to pick me out, because I was a face. I advertised FirstPlus for 10 years. We had something like £1.5billion out on loan and until a matter of months ago there were no repossessions. When that programme was made, [there were] no repossessions. Did they say that? Funnily enough, no."

Vorderman also expanded her business ventures launching a number of
sudoku products. In March 2007 she launched a brain training game called Carol Vorderman's Mind Aerobics together with
BSkyB. Also in 2007, she released a video game for
PlayStation 2 in the United States entitled Carol Vorderman's Sudoku.
In the autumn of 2008, soon after she completed her final regular Countdown show, Vorderman announced her latest commercial venture, her own property development and sales company specialising in overseas holiday and retirement homes in the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Spain. Called Carol Vorderman's Overseas Homes Ltd she sees the company as an extension of her own experiences in buying and selling properties over recent years and is aiming at a target market of "families aged 35 plus".

[15] at age 24 to Chris Mather, a
Royal Navy officer and former
rugby league international player, but the marriage only lasted twelve months. Vorderman's second marriage was to management consultant Patrick King in 1990 at age 29.

After meeting at a
Christmas party in 1999, Vorderman and

Des Kelly lived together in London from 2001, also using their other house in
Glandore,

Ireland. After five years together, Vorderman and Kelly separated in December 2006, publicly announcing the amicable split in January 2007,

Vorderman is the
patron of the
Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) (her older brother, Anton, was born with a
cleft lip and palate). In 2005 she was the winner of
Ant and Dec’s Gameshow Marathon. As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations
ITV ran a series of the nation’s favourite game shows featuring celebrities competing to become Gameshow Marathon winner and raise money for the charity of their choice. As series winner Carol won £60,000 for CLAPA.
Carol appeared in a short film promoting 'Run for the future' which promotes Prostate Cancer awareness and a charity run held every year on the Bristol Downs to raise funds for the BUI prostate appeal.

Freida Devvy Pinto (born October 18, 1984) is an
Indian actress and professional model, best known for her performance as Latika in her debut film
Slumdog Millionaire, which won the Academy Award for
Best Picture in 2009. Pinto won a
Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and was additionally nominated for the
BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Freida Pinto was born in
Mumbai.
Pinto met Rohan Antao while attending St Xavier's College in Mumbai. The two began dating and got engaged in 2008, but Pinto called off the engagement in January 2009.

Slumdog Millionaire, Freida anchored the international travel show, Full Circle on
Zee International Asia Pacific in English between 2006-07. Pinto was also featured in several television and print advertisements for products such as
Wrigley's Chewing Gum,

DeBeers. Pinto modeled for two years and appeared in runway shows and magazine covers.

In the movie, Pinto played the role of Latika, the girl with whom Jamal (
Dev Patel) is in love. At the 2008
Toronto International Film Festival, the movie won the Cadillac People's Choice Award.

2009 Golden Globe Awards, the movie won four awards. Pinto herself was nominated for "
Best Actress in a Supporting Role" at the
2009 BAFTA Awards,

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan (Birthname: Aishwarya Rai, Tulu: ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯಾ ರೈ) born 1 November 1973 is an Indian actress and former Miss World. Before starting her acting career, she worked as a model and gained fame after winning the Miss World title in 1994.
Rai, who made her movie debut in Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Iruvar (1997), had her first commercial success in the Tamil movie Jeans (1998), which earned her a Filmfare Best Actress Award South. She came to the attention of Bollywood in the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Her performance in the film won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. In 2002 she appeared in Bhansali's next project, Devdas (2002), for which she won her second Best Actress Award at the Filmfare. After a low phase in her career during 2003-2005, she appeared in the blockbuster Dhoom 2 (2006), which turned out to be her biggest commercial success. She later appeared in films like Guru (2007) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008), which were commercially successful and got her critical acclaim. Rai has thus established herself as one of the leading contemporary actresses in the Indian film industry.
During her career, Rai has acted in over forty movies in Hindi, English, Tamil and Bengali including the international productions Bride & Prejudice (2003), Mistress of Spices (2005), The Last Legion (2007) and The Pink Panther 2 (2009) in English.
Rai was born in Mangalore to Krishnaraj Rai and Vrinda Rai. Her family belongs to the Bunt community of Mangalore. She has one elder brother, Aditya Rai and he works in Navy and also co-produced one of Rai's movies, Dil Ka Rishta (2003). At an early age her parents moved to Mumbai where she attended the Arya Vidya Mandir high school in Santa Cruz. Rai then entered Jai Hind College at Churchgate for one year, and then moved to Ruparel College in Matunga to finish her "HSC" studies. She did well in school and planned to become an architect and went on pursuing studies in architecture. She can communicate in several languages, including her mother tongue Tulu,[2] as well as Hindi, English, Marathi and Tamil.[3] She started studying architecture.
While pursuing her studies in architecture, Rai began modeling on the side. In the 1994 Miss India contest, she won the second place behind Sushmita Sen, and was crowned Miss India World. She went on to win the Miss World title the same year, where she also won the Miss Photogenic award. She abandoned her studies after winning the pageant and spent one year reigning as Miss World in London. Rai then started working as a professional model and then moved on to her current profession as an actress.
Rai made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam's Tamil film, Iruvar (1997) with Mohanlal,[4] and was introduced to Bollywood in the film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya opposite Bobby Deol, which also released that year; the film did not do well at the box office.[5] However, her third project, S. Shankar's Tamil film, Jeans (1998) was a critical and commercial success, earning her the Filmfare Best Actress Award South. The film, which portrayed Rai in a dual role, took Rai two years to complete.
In 1999 Rai starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The film won critical acclaim and was her first Bollywood box office sucess. She won her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film. In the same year she appeared in Subhash Ghai's Taal , the film was a big success among the international audience, especially in the United States, where it became the first Indian film to reach the top 20 on Variety's box office list.[6] the film gave her another nomination for Best Actress at the Filmfare; her performances in both the films earned her critical acclaim.[7] In 2000, she played a supporting role in the hit films Mohabbatein and Josh. Later that year, she starred in the Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain, which won her positive reviews. In 2002, Rai appeared alongside Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in Sanjay Leela Bansali's lavishly produced Devdas. The film attracted Bollywood fans all over the world, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival.[8] It was during this time that she garnered the attention of the West as an Indian actress and went on to appear in the Hollywood projects. Devdas went on to become the highest grossing film of the year both in India[9] and overseas,[10] earning the actress her second Filmfare Best Actress Award.
In 2003, she acted in the critically acclaimed and commercial successful Bengali film, Chokher Bali, an adaptation of one of Rabindranath Tagore's novels by the same name.[11] However, all of her projects after (Chokher Bali except Khakee (2004), which was a moderate success failed at the box office,this included her domestic projects like Shabd, Kuch Naa Kaho, Kyun...! Ho Gaya Na and Raincoat as well as her international projects like Bride and Prejudice and Mistress of Spices.
Rai has been a regular at the Cannes Film Festival since 2002, and was a member of the Jury at Cannes in the year 2003. In The same month, her first foreign film, Bride and Prejudice released. The film was an Indian version of Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. Her next overseas venture was The Mistress of Spices which did not perform well at the box office. After a number of consecutive disappointments at the box office, she then appeared at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian art, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in New Delhi. In between her overseas acting stints, she appeared in the Indian film Bunty Aur Babli in a hugely popular[citation needed] seven minute dance sequence for the song "Kajra Re".
In the year 2006, she had two releases: Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2. While the former did poorly in India, her role in the latter, which was a sequel to the 2004 hit movie Dhoom brought her great attention. The film went on to become the biggest hit of the year and the highest grosser(unadjusted for inflation) till Om Shanti Om came out in 2007.[12] Though the film also sparked a controversy for a scene containing a kiss between her and Hrithik Roshan.[13] For her performance, she received nominations for Best Actress at a number of award ceremonies, including Filmfare. 2007 saw the release of Mani Ratnam's Guru which premiered in Toronto. The film, based on the life of Indian businessman Dhirubhai Ambani, was critically acclaimed and did well at the box office.[14] Provoked, based on the book Circle of Light where she portrays a real life character, was released on 6 April 2007 in India and the UK. The biographical movie portrays the life of Kiranjit Ahluwalia who faced severe domestic violence. At the end of April 2007, her first American film, The Last Legion released in Russia and the Netherlands and later opened in North American theaters in August 2007 disappointingly.[15] In 2008, she starred alongside Hrithik Roshan in Ashutosh Gowariker's historical drama Jodhaa Akbar playing the role of Jodha Bai, the wife of the Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, played by Roshan; and also co-starred with husband Abhishek Bachchan and her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan in Sarkar Raj, playing the CEO of a major power company proposing to establish a new power plant in rural Maharashtra.
Rai returned to the Tamil film industry and is working with Rajinikanth for the movie Endhiran, directed by S. Shankar, in an interview to the news channel Aaj Tak she confirmed a fee of Rs 6 crores for the film, making her the highest paid actress in India.[16] She is also slated to co-star with Vikram in Mani Ratnam's next film, Ashokavanam which is also to be simultaneously made in Hindi, titled Raavan, with Abhishek Bachchan in the lead.[17] She has recently signed on to appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next film opposite Hrithik Roshan,[18] Vipul Shah's next film opposite Akshay Kumar, Abhinay Deo's next film produced by Farhan Akhtar and Vishal Bharadwaj's next directorial venture.[19]
In 2009 Rai was awarded a Padma Shri for her contributions to Indian cinema.[20] In the same year she refused to accept the second-highest Order Of France, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres as her father was suffering from serious illness, and she wanted her whole family to attend the award function.[21] She is only the fourth Indian actor after Amitabh Bachchan, Nandita Das and Shahrukh Khan to be chosen for an Order Of France .[22]
In 2003 she became the first Indian actress to be a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival.[23]
In 2004 she travelled all the way to Siachen Glacier, which at a height of 13000 ft is the highest battlefield in the world, to boost the morale of the jawans for a special New Year episode on the NDTV show, Jai Jawan.[24]
In 2005 she became a brand ambassador for Pulse Polio, a campaign established by the Government of India in 1994 to eradicate Polio in India.[25]
In 2008 she along with her family laid the foundation of a special school for underprivilged girls in the Daulatpur village in Uttar Pradesh.The school will be made by her family and is going to be named after her.[26]
In Summer 2008, Rai joined her husband and father-in-law along with Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Ritesh Deshmukh and Madhuri Dixit on the Unforgettable World Tour. The first leg of the tour covered the USA, Canada, London, and Trinidad. The second leg of the tour will most likely happen by the end of this year 2008. Amitabh's company AB Corp Ltd. along with Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd are behind the concert.[27]
Aishwarya has previously dated Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi. She is now married to Indian actor Abhishek Bachchan who is three years her junior. After much speculation concerning their relationship, her engagement to Abhishek Bachchan was announced on January 14, 2007. The announcement was later confirmed by Amitabh Bachchan.[28] Rai married Bachchan on April 20, 2007 according to traditional Hindu rites of the South Indian Bunt community, to which she belongs. Token North Indian and Bengali ceremonies were also performed. The wedding took place in a private ceremony at the Bachchan residence Prateeksha in Juhu, Mumbai. Though the wedding was a private affair intended for the Bachchan and Rai family and friends, the involvement of the media turned it into it a national extravaganza.
Rai has been the most popular face of Indian cinema globally. In 2004 she was chosen by Time magazine as one of the World's "100 Most Influential People",[29] and appeared on the cover of Time magazine, Asia Edition in 2003.[30] She was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on 2 January 2005, which said that "at least according to thousands of Web sites, Internet polls and even Julia Roberts", she was "The World's Most Beautiful Woman".[31] In October 2004 a wax figure of Rai was put on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum.[32] She was the 6th Indian and the second Bollywood personality after her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan to get this honour.
In 2005 she became a global brand ambassador of L'Oreal alongside Andie Macdowell, Eva Longoria and Penelope Cruz. The same year, a special Tulip in Netherland was named "Aishwarya Rai" after her.[33] Rai became the first Indian to appear on such shows as Late Show with David Letterman, and was the first Bollywood personality to appear on Oprah's "Women Across the Globe" segment. In 2005, Harpers and Queen's list of 10 Most beautiful women in the world ranked her at the 9th spot.[34]
